The Costiera Amalfitana earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997 for a landscape that fuses vertical topography with centuries of human adaptation. Fifty kilometres of limestone cliffs plunge into the Tyrrhenian Sea, punctuated by thirteen comuni whose terraced lemon groves, pastel houses, and medieval stairways cling to slopes that rise almost vertically from the water. The Amalfi Coast owes its fame to geology — the Lattari Mountains meet the sea at angles that prohibit sprawl — and to a maritime republic that once rivalled Venice and Genoa. Amalfi itself, the coast's namesake, was the first of Italy's four great maritime republics. Between the ninth and twelfth centuries, its merchants controlled trade routes across the Mediterranean, codified Europe's first maritime law in the Tavole Amalfitane, and built the Duomo di Sant'Andrea, whose Arab-Norman façade still dominates the central piazza. The republic's decline began in 1131 with Norman conquest and was sealed by a catastrophic storm in 1343 that submerged much of the lower town. Today, the cathedral's bronze doors — cast in Constantinople in 1066 — remain one of the few physical links to that mercantile power. Positano, by contrast, was a quiet fishing village until the 1950s, when John Steinbeck's Harper's Bazaar essay described it as a place where nothing happens and visitors are content with that fact. The town's vertical layout — a cascade of pastel cubes connected by 1,700 steps — makes cars impractical and wandering inevitable. Ravello, perched 365 metres above sea level, offers a different vantage. Villa Rufolo's terraced gardens, built in the thirteenth century for a merchant dynasty, inspired Wagner's Parsifal; the annual Ravello Festival stages concerts on a platform cantilevered over the coast each summer. Amalfi Coast Day Tours navigate the Statale 163, a two-lane road carved into the cliffs in the 1850s that remains one of Europe's most engineered coastal routes. The road's 1,400 curves and single-lane tunnels make self-drive logistics difficult, which is why guided tours departing from Rome and Sorrento have become the default for first-time visitors. Boat excursions from Sorrento offer an alternative perspective, threading through sea caves and bypassing road traffic entirely. Between April and October, the coast attracts four million visitors; early morning departures and shoulder-season timing mitigate crowds without sacrificing access to the region's essential stops.
